Tyrese Gibson to Headline Universal’s Desert Eagle

Tyrese Gibson Desert Eagle

Tyrese Gibson, the musician and actor set to make his fourth big screen The Fast and the Furious franchise appearance in this summer’s Furious 7 has, according to a story at Deadline, today signed on to lead the Universal Pictures actioner Desert Eagle. Gibson himself wrote the original spec script alongside Mike Le.

Desert Eagle will star Gibson as a border patrol agent who, alongside his partner, seeks to take down a deadly drug cartel that has itself up within a casino on a Native American reservation.

“As far as roles, I want to do a real character piece,” Gibson told a few years ago. “I want to do a role where I get to play someone. That way I get to remove all my own instincts and habits and just completely submerge myself in the role… I’m really looking to try and step up and make people realize that I do have a little more in me than they probably would have guessed.”

Le is best known for scripting the upcoming Patient Zero, currently in the works at Screen Greems with Matt Smith (“Doctor Who”) and Natalie Dormer (“Game of Thrones”) both attached to headline. Newcomers Josh Campbell and Matthew Stuecken have been brought into rewrite Gibson and Le’s original draft.

Gibson is also attached to executive produce Desert Eagle through his Voltron Filmz. Scott Stuber will, meanwhile, produce through his own Bluegrass Films.

The Weinstein Company Plans Five-Part Sniper Miniseries The Reaper

The Reaper

The Weinstein Company today announced that they have acquired television rights to Nicholas Irving’s newly released autobiographical book “The Reaper: Autobiography of One of the Deadliest Special Ops Snipers”. The book offers the memoir of Special Operations Direct Action Sniper Nicolas Irving, the U.S. Army 3rd Ranger Battalion’s deadliest sniper. The plan is to adapt Irving’s story into a five-night television series event.

The first African American ever to serve as a sniper in his battalion, Irving famously became known as “The Reaper” by the end of his active service. During a 4-month period in mid-2009, Irving tallied an astounding 33 kills as a master sniper, in addition to setting records for enemy kills on a single deployment. His reputation as one of the great military snipers ever is such that he actually has an AR-15 rifle named after him. With his story, Irving gives an inside look at what those in the special operations community go through and the sacrifices they make to their country and families.

“‘The Reaper’ is a gripping story about a great American soldier that we are so proud to be a part of,” says Harvey Weinstein. “It’s a thrill to be teaming up with Brendan Deneen, Marc Resnick and the entire Macmillan team once again for this groundbreaking, multi-night television event. Nick Irving’s true bravery and heroism will make for some of the most riveting television ever seen and inspire patriotism in anyone who experiences it.”

“We’re extremely proud to be Nick Irving’s publisher and very excited to work with the Weinstein Company to bring his incredible story to the screen,” adds Macmillan Entertainment Executive Editor Brendan Deneen.

Deneen and Resnick, Irving’s editor at St. Martin’s, will executive produce the project on behalf of Macmillan Entertainment. Creative executive Lauren O’Connor and Mark Velez, SVP Scripted TV, will oversee production for TWC. The deal for “The Reaper” was negotiated by Sarah Sobel, EVP Business & Legal Affairs, for TWC with Deneen at Macmillan.

Production on “The Reaper” is set to begin this summer.

The Bates Motel Season Three Poster Features a Psycho and His Mother

Bates Motel Season Three

Following a stylish teaser video last month, A&E Networks has today debuted the poster art for the upcoming third season of their hit series, “Bates Motel.” Check it out below!

Aimed to be filled with family strife, murder and mystery, the third season of “Bates Motel” is lead by Vera Farmiga as Norma Bates and Freddie Highmore as her son, Norman. This season focuses on the evolution of the Bates family and dives head first into Norman’s waning ability to stay in denial about what’s happening to him and the lengths he will go to gain control of his fragile psyche. The dramatic events of last season leaves Norma reluctantly more aware of Norman’s mental fragility and is fearful of what he is capable of.

After a blissful summer of closeness with his mother, living within the safe confines of home and the Bates Motel, Norman’s fears about what really happened with Blaire Watson resurface and Norma questions what really happened. Forced to look at the truths about Norman for the first time, their deeply intricate relationship continues to evolve. Norma finds herself turning to the other man in her life, Norman’s half-brother, Dylan (Max Thieriot) and begins to rely on him in ways that she never expected. This relationship inevitably triggers jealousy in Norman and a new kind of love triangle between Norma and her two sons erupts. Estranged brother and uncle, Caleb (Kenny Johnson) returns to haunt the family throughout the season challenging the family bond even further. Pressures of the outside world take a hold of the family when newcomers Kevin Rahm (“Mad Men,” “Desperate Housewives”), Tracy Spiradakos (“Revolution”) and Ryan Hurst (“Sons of Anarchy”) arrive at White Pine Bay. After a summer of living at the Bates Motel, Sheriff Romero (Nestor Carbonell) and Norma have grown closer but there will always have that troubling question mark surrounding Norman. Something doesn’t feel right, but spite of his instincts, Romero finds himself continually drawn back to the Bates family — and to Norma. Emma (Olivia Cooke) also determined to find out what is happening to Norman becomes more emboldened, fearless, goes after the things she wants. Familiar face, Bradley (Nicola Peltz) returns to surprise the family and digs up old memories.

“Bates Motel” season three premieres Monday, March 9 at 9:00 ET/PT on A&E.

Meet the Characters of Better Call Saul in a New Video

AMC has debuted a new behind-the-scenes preview for their “Breaking Bad” prequel/spin-off “Better Call Saul” featuring the cast and crew discussing the characters of the series, including Bob Odenkirk’s Jimmy McGill, Michael McKean’s Chuck McGill, Patrick Fabian’s Howard Hamlin, Rhea Seehorn’s Kim Wexler, and fan-favorite Jonathan Banks as Mike Ehrmantraut.

”Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan and executive producer Peter Gould created the show together and serve as co-showrunners of the premiere season which is set six years before Saul Goodman meets Walter White. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and, often, against Jimmy, is Mike Erhmantraut. The series will track Jimmy’s transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts “criminal” in “criminal lawyer.” The series’ tone is dramatic, woven through with dark humor.

Gilligan directed the first episode of the series, which has already been greenlit for a second season of 13 episodes. The first season will consist of 10 episodes and will premiere on February 9, 2015 at 10/9c.
